had a really cute black kid today. he walked in very happy. i said "hello!"
then he responded with "hi!"
then i ask, "how are you?!"
and he smiles.
lots of kids don't say anything if they are shy. so i just assumed he was shy.
then i started introducing myself, explaining what we were going to do today, then asked him, "have you ever been to the dentist before?"
then he looks at me and says, "yo no hablo ingles!"
it was muy precioso.
then we switch to espanol.
anyway, i guess it was wrong to assume because he was black he would understand english. there are a lot of black puerto ricans, after all. and i shouldn't treat people unequally. i almost ALWAYS ask EVERYONE if they prefer espanol or english.
so, that is how people feel when they start speaking to me in chinese, and then i have to let them know that i have NO IDEA what they are sayin'.
