went to police athletic league with 8 of my coworkers this morning for martin luther king junior day of service. it was a pretty cool center - lots of gyms, computer room, dance room, game room, homework room. it's free for all kids 6-18 and it's helping keep the philadelphia youth off the streets and out of trouble. we didn't do too much, just helped clean some windows, mopped the floors and tables. but, it was a good break from clinic. and we were able to meet some other folks from the community (volunteers from a local law firm) and then the staff at PAL.

after we had a potluck w/ esperanza and afternoon retreat. our speaker talked about the "whole gospel", meaning integrating service/social justice/mercy/compassion with evangelism (as compassion on souls). the gospel needs to be expressed with our hands, feet, as well as proclaimed with our mouths. he went to the 2010 lausanne convention in south africa and saw, not through the amazing speakers at the convention, that missions, essentially, is loving God and loving neighbour - portrayed when he visited one of the impoverished townships and saw that people were caring for one another.

he read from luke 10, which starts with a busy massive commissioning of disciples, sent out to preach. then goes to very basic principles of "how to inherit eternal life?" - by loving God and loving neighbour, like the 'good samaritan'. then finally wrapping up with loving God starts w/ Mary spending time w/ the Lord, perhaps as a prerequisite to loving neighbour.
